I never encountered any hostility there. Still, further west in Australia is more ripe for finding rides; as the country becomes sparse and rural, people become more understanding about the need for a ride. They realize they might be the last car you see for a good long while, and as a result, are more generous about picking you up.

Sydney, on the other hand, is far too urbane and people are less open-hearted. It’s more like a U.S. city that way.

In general, when hitchhiking around the globe, the rural areas, or even urban areas in countries still connected to their rural roots, are going to be easier places to find rides. And countries with bad winters or the opposite, bad deserts, are going to have drivers willing to see giving a ride as a real rescue, because they don’t want to see you get stranded.

Rio de Janeiro is a terrible place for hitchhiking. The crime rate is insanely high, and everyone knows it, so sticking your thumb out just makes you look suspicious. It also makes you a target for crime, so you’re basically getting it from both ends: You’re seen as both criminal and victim. Taxis aren’t expensive in Rio so, in the city proper, that’s the way to get around. The beaches, especially Ipanema, are friendly for foot travelers, and you can do the beach bum thing, but don’t try hitchhiking as a lifestyle in Rio, or Sao Paulo for that matter. Once you get into more rural areas (again) like Minas Gerias or, especially, Bahia, people are much more generous with their rides.”

The Importance of LOINC Code Mapping

In the world of medical data, accuracy and timing are of the utmost importance. The sharing of test data is one of those areas where this is critical. Without accurate information shared in a timely fashion, the quality of health care can be diminished. Fortunately, LOINC code mapping has come a long way and provides the answer for those dependent upon shared test result information.

Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes or LOINC as it is more commonly known helps bridge the gap of understanding between two test code directories. Why is this important? When sharing medical information such as is frequently the case between physician’s offices, laboratories and hospitals, the ability to match the tests form the sending computer to the receiving computer is imperative.

A LOINC database looks at all the characteristics of a given laboratory test including things like unit of measure, concentration and other factors and compares it to other laboratory tests and their characteristics, looking for a match. This eliminates errors and miscommunications between computers.

Without a loinc mapping service, the two computers could not “speak” to each other properly and test data could not be accurately communicated electronically. This would slow down the flow of information and ultimately, any treatment needed.

Using this type of protocol speeds the transfer of data and improves accuracy. Those who need the results can be assured of getting them more quickly using a LOINC code mapping system than through other forms of data transmittal.

In order for the system to work properly, test codes and characteristics must be updated regularly and compared to codes and characteristics being used by other entities. It requires the cooperation of many clients to keep the database in working order but in the end allows for accurate mapping and a viable LOINC code that everyone can use.

What’s The Difference?

Some persons will argue that a steam boiler and a steam generator is the exact same thing while others will tell that they are similar but very different. The fact is that whether it is termed as a generator or a boiler, they are both machines that apply heat to water in order to create steam. This is the same effect that can be noted when you put a pot of water on to boil. The difference in definition is often attributed to the diverse pressure levels of older and newer boilers. Most things on this earth are more complicated than they appear. For instance, see that shirt in your closet? The blue camisole with the hideous bow on it? Take a look at the tag: made in China or Indonesia or the like, right? That shirt has probably been to more places than you have and been handled by more people than you can imagine. That shirt had to be manufactured, packaged, shipped, unpacked, repacked (a process known, inventively enough, as pick and pack), shipped again, placed on a shelf, and then finally bought by you, yourself, with no indication of the long and tortuous journey it had to undergo to reach your grasping hands.

First, manufacturing. The shirt probably has some synthetic material in it, which means part of it began in an oil field and the other part (the natural part, if there is a natural part) began in a regular field somewhere, with the former likely located in the Middle East and the latter probably in the United States, India, China, or any one of a dozen nations in Africa. It was almost invariably spun into fabric and then sewn into a shirt somewhere in Asia (home of the largest textile industries in the world).

Second, transport. The shirt was put in a box and shipped to a warehouse somewhere fairly near the manufacturing area before being sorted out and shipped again to another warehouse on your home continent. Then it was picked out of another pile of boxes and packed again for shipment to your local store, who ordered it to refill their inventories. Then someone put it on the shelf and arranged it just so to catch your eye, and you saw it, decided you must have it, and forked over the cash for it. Not a thought as to its tremendous worldwide journey– no, you knew it would look nice with your hat.

And… I don’t know, maybe it does.

Finishing the Job

After two years of hard work our home is finally approaching completion, with just a set of cheap velux blinds to finish the job!

Those who know us will know that we poured our heart and soul into this house, but unless they were around two years ago they might not know that it wasn’t always the cute little place it is now. When we bought the house it was completely gutted. The walls were bare; the floorboards were rotted; the plumbing was in terrible shape, and the less said about the attic the better. It was a wreck, picked up for pennies at auction with little hope that it could ever be restored.

Looking at the house now I can’t help but feel proud about what we’ve achieved, and when I finally fit the cheap velux blinds we bought this weekend I know I’ll be ready to break out the champagne.

The best part? We got an offer on the house yesterday. 30% more than our investment. Cheers!

iPhone 4s Repair Costs

There’s never a good time to need an iphone 4s repair service, but it’s even more annoying when money is tight. In the last year I’ve traveled to over a dozen countries, and by this point my bank balance is looking pretty unhealthy. Free Travel Around the World

All the excitement of world travel, of being an “acrobat of the road,” is enhanced dramatically when the travel is free of cost. This happened to me for a while when I won a sweepstakes, providing airfare and accommodations in Singapore. I was able to change my departure date despite a recalcitrant airline, and so I extended my stay. After a thrilling 4-day stay in Singapore, all expenses paid, I resumed my normal, more frugal, mode of travel, and hitchhiked through parts of Asia I had never previously explored.

Since I did the rest of the trip on my own, it’s not actually fair to see the travel was entirely free of cost. However, airfare is usually the majority of my cost so it was huge. Plus, in Singapore, I was at the kind of fancy hotel I normally avoid to save money, and MAN it was fun seeing how the other half lives! It was gorgeous, with fabulous views, and comfortable in every possible way, down to the thread count on the bedsheets.

I Found the Ideal Locksmith

I was in trouble when I accidentally left my keys in my locked and thought about calling locksmith long beach. Taking That Road Trip

I took a year off before completing my degree in public administration. After all, that’s a very serious degree and I had been working hard on it, I wanted to gad about and explore my dreams for a while first. I headed to Belgium, and hitchiked through Europe for quite a while. I saw a lot of interesting sites. I didn’t just hitch, I also used the Euro Rail, and that pass is as good as everyone says. Between hitchiking, Euro Rail, and youth hostels, it was all quite affordable and I had enough adventures to recount for a lifetime.

I ended up in Eastern Europe for a while, and traveled down the Danube. I adored Budapest, which I have learned to pronounce BUDA-PESHT, and I was able to visit some family heritage sites, as I am Hungarian on my father’s side. I also visited Prague before leaving the East for more Western European sightseeing.
